In the best Ruskinian tradition, sometimes the beauty/truth dyad is so exquisite I am moved to tears. This happened twice this year, both times in Canberra. Juno Gemes’ Proof: Portraits from the Movement 1978-2003 at the National Portrait Gallery’s Commonwealth Place was one great photograph after another. Gemes’ project documents the Aboriginal community over three decades, in moments sometimes personal, sometimes nationally significant. Oodgeroo Noonuccal (Kath Walker) in shorts in 1982 is impossibly fabulous.
